About the Session

In the context of the Syrian revolution and its accompanying narratives, processes of documentation and archiving are of paramount importance with regards to preserving memory, strengthening counter-hegemonic voices, and pursuing justice. How is knowledge production on Syria’s recent social and cultural history being organized today? Who gets to write Syria’s history? What role do today’s documentation and archiving efforts aim to play when it comes to questions of memory, identity, and justice in a future Syria? How important is preserving oral history? In this panel, three founders of initiatives active in the field of documentation offer their personal take on what it means to document Syrians’ individual stories, sociocultural transformations, and revolutionary cultural expressions.
