museum of activism
#Syria

From October 14–16, 2021, the Museum of Activism (MoA) launched its first exhibition at coculture's space in Berlin, bringing together activists, artists, and engaged audiences to reflect on the power of nonviolent resistance. The exhibition featured a collection of artifacts provided by Syrian activists, showcasing the creative and courageous methods they employed in their struggle for dignity and freedom.

The Syrian Revolution for Dignity, which began in 2011, was rooted in peaceful activism. What started as protests against the regime’s brutality quickly evolved into a nationwide movement, with Syrians using art, humor, and symbolic acts of resistance to demand their rights. From graffiti and hidden loudspeakers to marches and public demonstrations, the exhibition highlighted how nonviolent tactics became a defining element of the uprising, even in the face of extreme repression.

As part of the event, MoA hosted Conversations on Activism, a series of discussions examining the broader implications of activism worldwide. Rime Allaf led a conversation with Joumana Seif and Yassin Al Haj Saleh, exploring the lasting impact of the Syrian uprising and its relevance to global movements. Another discussion, moderated by Rafif Jouejati, featured Michael Beer (Nonviolence International) and Kristyan Benedict (Amnesty International), focusing on the common strategies and challenges faced by activists in different contexts, including Myanmar and Sudan.

The exhibition at coculture's space provided a space for reflection, dialogue, and solidarity, reinforcing the essential role of activism in the fight for justice.
