I am a camera
conceptual photography workshop for syrian artists

Anchor in the landscape, Adam Broomberg & Rafael Gonzalez, 2023

Both a practical and theoretical introduction into conceptual image making designed for any artist interested in the broadest and most challenging use of the photographic image. The workshop was designed to take the participants from the initial concept development to the production of a final result. An unknown final result, ending up a series of individual works or a collaborative project like a book, a website or a Netflix series.

Structured over five meeting, the photographer Adam Broomberg guided the workshop. This is done using the feedback technique, designed for generous, productive feedback instead of crude criticism. Once the participants established their identities and areas of visual, political, and theoretical exploration, the workshop began. Embracing risk over perfection, the process encouraged stepping out of comfort zones and experimenting with new approaches.

With the participants' agreement, the outcomes of the workshop were later publicly presented through a public showcase in coculture Space and Vault project-space in London. The selection of 10 artists for the workshop was carried out by coculture and Adam Broomberg. The workshop was carried out in collaboration with Sankt Studio. The first workshop meeting was held on Saturday 3rd of October 2020, the last on Sunday 25th of October 2020.
